Ohio University officials gave students, fac- ulty and the administrators an opportunity yesterday to participate in plans that could reshape the Athens campus over the next 10 years.
University Planning & Implementation held an open forum to discuss a toolkit that contains information and data from studies involving on- and off-campus housing and space needs for academic purposes.
“I have no problem finding needs on campus,” said Pam Callahan, university planner. “Our revenue just isn’t what it used to be, and that’s why this process is so necessary.”
Students, faculty and administrators walked through Walter Hall Rotunda yesterday afternoon to view presentation boards that illustrated some of the drastic changes that could be in store for OU. Callahan gave a PowerPoint presentation to about 30 people at 4:30 p.m.
“It’s such an exciting plan,” said Morgan Allen, Student Senate president. “It would have been nice to involve even more people.”
The overall Campus Master Plan proposes 28 construction projects, including 21 new buildings. Possible construction focuses on North, South and College Greens and includes a boathouse on the Hocking River and the development of a “Clippinger Green.”
“Clippinger is an area right now that we can’t really qualify as a green, but it’s got some amazing potential,” Callahan said.
The presentation explained possible changes to OU, from housing and transportation needs to space utilization.
Reactions from the approximately 30 people present were positive, if not a little taken aback by the amount of information.
“It’s certainly overwhelming,” Callahan said. “I am amazed at how much of the 1996 Master Plan has been implemented. (Walter Hall), the new student center, the extended golf course … it’s exciting and keeps me going on this.”
“I really liked the Clippinger Green transformation and the transportation changes are huge,” Allen said. “The space management information is much more interesting than the name suggests. There are tons of really cool data in this process.”
