An Ohio University Police Department Officer was fired and banned from university property Monday for threatening a superior officer.

Greg Sloane, of Albany, violated OUPD conduct policies when he “threatened a superior officer with bodily harm in a telephone call” on May 21, according to the university

“His behavior is not allowed, not legal and violates university and OUPD policy,” said Sally Linder, university spokeswoman.

At a July 9 pre-disciplinary hearing, Sloane was found to be in violation of OUPD’s policies on member misconduct, conduct unbecoming a police officer, conduct and treatment of department members and harassment and work place violence, according to a letter to Sloane from the Associate Vice President for Finance and Administration for Human Resources, James Kemper.

Sloane was also found to have violated Ohio Revised Code for his behavior, according to the letter.

Sloane was on paid administrative leave from May 21 to the day of his termination, July 30.

Exactly what was said to the lieutenant or his or her identity has not been released.

Sloane’s wife, Cathy, is suing the university for alleged sexual harassment from another of Sloane’s superiors, Lt. Stephen Noftz. Although an independent report released March 9, 2006 determined there was insufficient evidence to substantiate the claims, the case is still before the Ohio Court of Claims. A trial date has not been scheduled yet.

The decision to fire Sloane was based solely on his behavior in this incident and had nothing to do with Noftz, Linder said.

Sloane has the option to appeal. He was unable to be reached for comment.
