Rep. Charlie Wilson, D-Ohio, was released from the hospital yesterday where he had been recovering from an emergency surgery, according to a news release.
Doctors at George Washington University Hospital repaired a tear in the wall of Wilson’s colon during Thursday’s surgery, which was caused by a routine colon screening Oct. 8.
He expects to return to Congress after a few weeks’ rest at home, said Hillary Wicai Viers, Wilson’s communication director.
Wilson, 64, will remain in Washington, D.C., until Thursday, when some legislators in the House of Representatives, including Wilson, will attempt to override the presidential veto on the State Children’s Health Insurance Program bill, she said.
The State Children’s Health Insurance Program bill would increase that program’s funding by an additional $35 billion over the next five years, funded by a 61-cent a pack increase in the federal tax on cigarettes, Viers said. The bill has already been passed by both the Senate and the House of Representatives, but the president vetoed it Oct. 3.
