Faculty, students and many others honored the creation of Ohio University during the annual Founders Day Convocation Friday.

The convocation celebrated the university’s history and recognized distinguished faculty members and students.

Ann Fidler, dean of the Honors Tutorial College, spoke in recognition of the 50 students who won nationally and internationally competitive awards.

There is something about being at this place that amplifies students’ values and spurs them into action, she said.

Executive Vice President and Provost Kathy Krendl acknowledged faculty award recipients and announced the winners of the Vision Ohio Excellence Award, Tim Anderson and Geoff Buckley, associate professors of geography.

Anderson and Buckley led tours that familiarized faculty, staff, students and other people with the region and how it affects OU culturally, socially and economically.

OU President Roderick McDavis gave the Founders Day address, commending faculty and students who have contributed to the success and prestige of the university and reminiscing in his own experiences as a student at OU.

He praised the university for the level of connection between faculty and students and for always being a place of promise and encouragement.

“It is the experiences, opportunities, our unique setting and, most importantly, the people of Ohio University that help encourage our students to harness their ability, passion and talent to realize their true potential,” he said.

Justin Lucas, a junior telecommunications major and one of the students recognized for winning a nationally competitive award, said he thought the ceremony was very respectful.

The convocation gave respect to the past while looking forward to the future and had all of the pomp and circumstance one would hope for, he said.
