Ohio University mothers and their children still hit the bars Uptown despite nighttime temperatures in the 50s.
“I told her we’re going to the bars tonight,” freshman Ashley Neel said. “But she better take a nap before so she can keep up with the big kids.”
Ashley and her mother Joan said they saw the Singing Men of Ohio and Women’s Chorale concert Saturday and planned to bar hop in the evening.
This year’s Moms Weekend was quieter than usual, according to Athens Police Department officers.
“Really, based on the number of incidents, it seemed to be pretty much a normal weekend for us,” Officer Roger Deardorff said, adding that most Moms Weekend incidents are usually alcohol-related. He could not provide the number of arrests or citations.
“I saw a few crazy moms,” mother Karen Wiginton said. “It’s like they sit in their house all year except for this one night.”
Junior Kelley Marling said she saw moms grinding on students at the bars.
Others chose to stay out of the bars. Sophomore Jessica Powell and her mother Lana had tea Saturday afternoon at Jessica’s sorority, Kappa Phi. Lana said she looked forward to hearing her daughter sing Saturday night at the Gospel Café in The Front Room and play softball yesterday.
Freshman Amanda Lock and her mother Sheila Salyer went shopping Friday and watched movies in Lock’s dorm. They planned to go uptown, but not to any bars.
“We are just going with the moment and don’t have any specific plans,” Salyer said. “I just wanted to spend time with her.”
This year’s most popular shirt from Alpha Phi Omega read, “I get it from my mama,” a takeoff from the song “I Got It from My Mama” by will.i.am, said freshman Erica Amicone, who was selling the shirts this weekend.
