Assistant Managing Editor's Note

Published: Tuesday, April 3, 2007

Sometimes putting out a student-run newspaper is quite the Catch-22.

Our No. 1 job is to supply you with information you want to know and need to know. But as many events of this past year prove, we do not always report news that makes everyone happy; it’s sometimes not pretty, and it might even appear that, as students, we’re shooting ourselves in the proverbial foot by reporting negatively on the institution.

We want you to know we’re aware that for every bit of bad news at Ohio University and in Athens, there are many more positive stories that don’t get told and people that don’t get recognized.

But we want to tell those stories too.

Slated for the end of this quarter is a weeklong series that recognizes 25 remarkable undergraduate Ohio University students. We’re working from suggestions of writers and editors at The Post to compile this list, but more importantly we are looking for suggestions from you, and we want the pool of candidates to be as diverse as possible.

Other universities such as Oregon State and Cornell have created similar series in the recent past, but they gave the final 25 students the distinction of “influential,” a term that rings stuffy and prestigious for what we want. Pick a word: Interesting. Fascinating. Offbeat. Ambitious. Important. We don’t want to miss any possible candidates just because they didn’t found an organization or save a cat from a tree.

If you’re in student government or a student organization, that’s great and we want to consider you — but it’s not essential to be a candidate for the list. Overall, we’re looking for students who have set themselves apart from their peers in ways big and small, and in all areas our writing staffs — campus, city, culture and sports — cover. We’re interested in undergrads who have played a role in the big stories of this past year, but we’re really searching for stories that still need to be told.

To pass on the name of someone you believe should be on the list — feel free to suggest yourself if you deserve it — send an e-mail to mb102503@ohiou.edu with the subject line “25 Bobcats to Watch Submission” and the following information:

1. Your name and contact information

2. The name and year of the recommended student and, if possible, his or her contact information

3. A short paragraph detailing what makes the student a strong candidate for the list

The deadline for submissions is Friday, April 20.
