‘Speak up for what is right;’ silence implies endorsement

Published: Thursday, January 24, 2008

Letter to the Editor

This past weekend, it was brought to my attention that allegedly several Martin Luther King Jr. themed parties were planned in which guests were invited to dress or participate in actions that had negative racial overtones. In addition to these allegations, there were comments made via Facebook and other communication mediums which were viewed as offensive.

As a result of such behavior, I am extremely disappointed in the actions of a few of our Ohio community members and I call upon all of us to denounce this behavior when possible.  As community members, it is incumbent upon each of us to hold each other accountable for our actions.  When you become aware of activity that does not uphold the values of Ohio University, you must speak up for what is right.  It is important to note that not all persons engage in this type of activity to intentionally hurt others by their actions. Some people believe that they are merely “having fun,” not recognizing that others might be offended. However, regardless of motive, if we remain silent on this issue then we endorse the behavior as being acceptable.  I encourage all of us to use such instances as learning experiences rather than focusing on the negative impact of the behavior. It is important that we facilitate constructive dialogue in an effort in increasing cultural competency.  Speak up for what is right at Ohio
University!
