The Bobcats and pitcher Anthony Gressick (37) lost to Xavier 4-3 last Wednesday. The team will face Duquesne at 6 p.m. tonight at Bob Wren Stadium.

As the Ohio baseball season continues with tonight’s contest against Duquesne, the Bobcats still are experiencing setbacks to go along with their successes.

After losing the series opener, Ohio swept Buffalo in a twin bill Saturday to take its second conference series win of the season. The victories snapped a season-high five-game losing streak.

“We’re disappointed we didn’t win three,” Ohio coach Joe Carbone said.

However, Carbone said he felt the team rebounded strongly after Friday’s 4-3 loss.

“I was very proud of how the guys performed especially after coming off a tough loss Friday,” Carbone said.

Despite the joy of snapping a five-game losing streak by winning two in a row, an injury to starting pitcher John Angelicchi (1-5) has the Bobcats worrying about his chances of helping the team.

“He took a line drive off the middle of the shin,” Carbone said. “They don’t think it’s broken, but he has a major contusion on the middle of his leg. He’s on crutches; he can’t walk yet. He’s very questionable for next weekend.”

With Angelicchi possibly on the bench, the bullpen will get more work.

Relievers Chris Rigo and Yale Silverman answered the call following Angelicchi’s departure in the second inning of Saturday’s second game. Rigo (2-0) earned the win, allowing two runs over his two innings of work, while Silverman tossed the final six innings for the save. It was Silverman’s second appearance of the day.

“He came in, in relief for Anthony (Gressick) and pitched two innings and gave up one hit and no runs (in the first game),” Carbone said. “He pitched six innings in (the second) game and gave up one run so he did a good job for us this weekend.”

Providing Bobcat pitchers with plenty of support, Ohio hitters smashed 35 hits for 28 runs during the doubleheader.

“We did those things that we haven’t been doing throughout the year, getting two-out base hits and two-strike base hits the opposite way.” Carbone said. “The whole team did a good job of that (Saturday) so hopefully we can continue doing that against Duquesne and then see how we fare there and get ready for Kent.”

Ohio plays host to Duquesne at 6 p.m. today at Bob Wren Stadium in its last home non-conference game of the season.
