The Ohio men’s golf team will swing into the Delaware Country Club in Muncie, Ind., this week for the Yestingsmeier Invitational.
Ball State University will host the two-day event, which will feature Mid-American Conference foes Bowling Green and Toledo, today and tomorrow.
Coach Bob Cooley said he thinks solid practice will help the Bobcats improve after last week’s disappointing finish in the season-opening John Piper Intercollegiate. Ohio finished 13th out of 15 teams in the event.
“We had a good week of practice this week,” Cooley said. “We just need to hit more fairways in this event and use the extra preparation to our advantage.”
The golfers will play 36 holes today, followed by 18 holes tomorrow. The course at Delaware Country Club is 6,438 yards, and par for the course is 70.
Cooley will fill his card with senior Mark Phillips, sophomore Tim Gusweiler, sophomore Stewart Jamieson, sophomore Chad Warmbein and freshman Mark Reinhold.
Phillips led the Bobcats at the John Piper, finishing 26th overall after shooting a 75 in all three rounds. However, Cooley said he thinks it is key that his young players progress throughout the season.
“Last week was tough for the young guys, but it gave them experience,” Cooley said. “This week I’ll have two new ones with me so hopefully it will be a good experience for them.”
The Bobcats finished seventh in last year’s Yestingsmeier Invitational but won’t be focused on that result this time around.
“We’re not worried so much about where we finish right now,” Cooley said. “We’re just trying to get better."
