On fourth down and four with just over two minutes to play, Wyoming quarterback Karsten Sween threw an incomplete-pass that appeared to give Ohio a victory. But through the triumphant screams of the home crowd came sounds of whistles.
A timeout from head coach Frank Solich just before the play gave Sween and the Cowboys the second chance they needed. On the next play, Sween threw a touchdown pass to a slanting Michael Ford to put Wyoming up for good by a score of 34-33.
Wyoming took the lead early, when Sween navigated a 13-play 83-yard drive, which was capped off with a Sween touchdown pass to wide receiver David Leonard. Kicker Billy Vinnedge missed the extra-point to keep the Cowboys lead at 6-0.
Chris Garrett would answer with a 94-yard touchdown return for a touchdown that put the Bobcats up 7-6. It was Garrett's first career touchdown off of a kickoff return and the second longest return in school history.
Later in the first quarter punter Matt Schulte punted the ball to Cowboy receiver Hoost Marsh, who fumbled the ball after a sizeable return and cornerback Idris Lawrence recovered it on the 31-yard line. Wyoming's defense held the Bobcats to a Michael Braunstein 42-yard field goal, which put Ohio up 10-6.
After recovering an onside kick, Sween gave the ball right back to Ohio when cornerback Mark Parson intercepted him. That started a string of three straight drives that ended with interceptions.
After a 40-yard completion to freshman wide receiver Matt Donahue, quarterback Brad Bower threw the ball downfield once again, but this hit a Cowboy who went down at the five-yard line.
Sween also tried to go deep, but Michael Mitchell was waiting for Sween's pass at the 47-yard line.
Bower redeemed himself after throwing two interceptions when he completed a 68-yard pass to tight end Andrew Mooney to put the Bobcats up 17-6 with 1:20 remaining.
With just 19 seconds remaining running back Kalvin McRae busted a 37-yard run, and Braunstein kicked his second field goal of the game as time expired to put the Bobcats up 20-6 at the half.
The Bobcats came out strong in the second-half when Bower eluded a sack and lofted the ball to Kalvin McRae deep down the sideline for a 47-yard gain. But Wyoming would once again force Ohio to settle for a field goal.
That's when the Cowboys offense took over.
Running back Devin Moore gashed the Bobcat defense for 33-yards, which set-up a 1-yard touchdown run by Moore to get Wyoming within.
Moore would again get into the end zone with a 17-yard run to pull the Cowboys within three at 23-20.
After the Bobcat offense was forced to punt, Wyoming looked to take their first lead since the 11-minute mark of the first quarter. But Jameson Hartke picked off quarterback Ian Hetrick and returned the interception 30-yards for a touchdown to put the Bobcats up 30-20.
Sween came back in and led Wyoming on another impressive drive. After a pass interference call, running back Wynel Seldon punched it in from the 4-yard line to pull the Cowboys within three at 30-27.
Michael Mitchell grabbed his second interception of the day and returned it to the Cowboys 30-yard line to set-up Braunstein's fourth field goal of the day. Braunstein's four field goals were a school single-game record and was the 15th straight field goal he has made dating back to last season.
Wyoming then went on the 11-play 53-yard drive that sealed the game.
Ohio fell to 2-2 on the season and will get ready to open Mid-American Conference play against Kent State next weekend.
