The Ohio women’s golf team will tee it up for the second time this season at the Nittany Lion Invitational Sunday.
The 14-team tournament will be hosted by Penn State and played on the Blue Course in University Park, Pa. Thirty-six holes will be played on Sunday, and the final round of 18 will follow on Monday.
It has been nearly three weeks since the Bobcats participated in their last tournament, the Brickyard Fall Invitational, and finished in seventh place out of 11 teams. Assistant coach Jeff Hetler, who will be the only coach traveling with the girls this week, is not concerned about the long layoff.
“That first tournament was just scheduled really early in the season,” Hetler said. “The long break just let us focus more and helped us form the lineup for this tournament.”
Hetler will fill his card this week with senior Katie Stafford, junior Lindsay Bergman, sophomore Lauren Bergman, sophomore Colleen Lienesch and freshman Erin Cahill.
Stafford led the Bobcats at the Brickyard, posting two rounds of 76. Hetler expects her good play to continue, but realizes the rest of the team must step up.
“Of course Katie is a leader for this team off the course, being that she’s the only senior on the team,” Hetler said. “But when it is an individual sport like golf, it’s not like she can get the team all fired up and ready to go. Katie will play well, but the rest of the team has to get ready on their own.”
The weather forecast for the Invitational is good, but Hetler seems to have other concerns.
“Last year this course played tough,” Hetler said. “The greens were fast and the rough was deep, so hopefully we stay in the fairway.”
Other Mid-American Conference schools competing in the event are Western Michigan, Bowling Green, and Ball State.
