Golf: 'Cats struggle, finish last

Published: Monday, October 15, 2007

The LPGA Xavier Invitational concluded on Sunday with Florida Atlantic taking first place and the Ohio women’s golf team at the opposite end of the leaderboard, finishing 14th out of 14 teams.

The Bobcats finished with a 117-over par score of 981, including a team-worst 329 in the final round. Finishing strong is something Ohio has had trouble with all year.

The Bobcats posted scores of 328, 324 and 329 in their three rounds. Even Ohio’s team-best round of 324 was only the 12th best score of that round.

Senior Katie Stafford led the Bobcats with a 26-over par 242 for the tournament, which was enough to earn her a tie for 49th place individually. The next best Bobcat was sophomore Lauren Bergman, who tallied a 28-over par score of 244, putting her in a tie for 54th place at the end of the Invitational.

Some of the poor scoring can be attributed to the fact that this was the first time any of the Ohio golfers had seen the course and one of the only times in their college careers that they will have to play on Bermuda grass, which usually makes for slicker greens and difficult roughs.

Fellow Mid-American Conference competitors Bowling Green and Western Michigan didn’t fare much better than the Bobcats. With a 113-over par score of 977, the Falcons finished one spot ahead of Ohio in 13th place. Western Michigan took 10th place with a 73-over par score of 937.

The Bobcats will next be in action Friday at Elks Run Country Club in Batavia. That event will be a three-team match featuring the University of Cincinnati and IUPUI.QUICK STATSLPGA XAVIER INVITATIONALSaturday/yesterday, LPGA Champions Course, Daytona Beach, Fla.FINAL RESULTS:1.
