Senior center Jim Fuhs heads towards the goal during Ohio’s game against Oakland Oct. 12. Ohio swept Michigan-Dearborn this weekend, winning 5-3 Friday and 5-1 Saturday.

For only the second time this year, Ohio finished a weekend series with two wins. The Bobcats traveled to Michigan-Dearborn to take on the Wolves and swept the series by scores of 5-3 and 5-1.

On Friday, the teams traded goals through the first to end the period tied 2-2. The Bobcats used a two-goal second to take a 4-3 lead into the final period. In the third, Brandon Fackey scored a shorthanded goal for the Bobcats to put the game away.

“Our defense played a more conservative style,” coach Dan Morris said. “They bought into (the conservative style) Friday. I give our defense a lot of credit.”

Morris said because of the team’s being shorthanded on defense, forwards Jim Roach and Brandon Steffek played as defenders in the series.

“They both did good, which is good to see,” Morris said.

Playing two solid games in a row has been a weakness for Ohio all year, but it had no problem Saturday, putting together a dominating performance in a 5-1 win. Goaltender Paul Marshall carried a shutout into the third period, but the Wolves converted on a two-man advantage to spoil his bid.

This series was the first in which the Bobcats gained a sweep on the road. The difference this week compared to previous weeks was that Ohio (8-4) made very few mistakes against the Wolves (2-8).

“We were in better shape; we were a little quicker,” Morris said. “We wanted to limit our mistakes and we did that really well. We limited their chances, and the chances they did get, Paul played really well.”

Marshall played both nights in goal for the second straight weekend, while Chris Carlson recovers from a wrist injury sustained two weeks ago. The two wins this weekend improved Marshall’s record to 7-1 on the year.

Ohio continues its eight-game road trip next weekend as it travels to Missouri to take on Lindenwood.
