Going into tomorrow’s game against Ball State, Ohio is riding a four-game winning streak — its longest of the season.
This is also the longest Mid-American Conference winning streak since the 1997-98 season, when the team won nine straight conference match-ups.
With five wins, Western Michigan is the only team in the conference with a longer current winning streak.
The Bobcats’ record of 11-8 overall and 4-2 MAC has them tied with Bowling Green for first place in the East division.
“Our confidence is growing every day,” said senior Lauren Kohn. “We’re playing some of our best basketball right now. We still have a lot of things that we need to improve on and we can tighten up a little bit but we’re getting better every game.”
Ohio has conquered the road as well, going 5-4 overall and 2-1 MAC. Coach Sylvia Crawley said the seven-and-a-half-hour drive up to Central Michigan for Saturday’s game was a big test.
“It was very difficult to travel that far and mentally have yourself ready to go,” she said. “Last year for the big games they were the underdogs and this year teams are coming at us a bit more and they have to continue to be comfortable delivering when everything is on the line.”
Kohn gets MAC recognition
Kohn’s 22 points in each of Ohio’s two most recent games has not gone unrecognized.
Yesterday, the MAC named Kohn the MAC East Player of the Week.
The award is a career first for Kohn, but this is the second week in a row that a Bobcat has won. Sophomore Jennifer Bushby was named last week.
Kohn has been working hard for her team and is happy to get the honor.
“I’m very honored; it’s a great award to get,” Kohn said. “Just having two Ohio players back to back is really something good for our team and for our program.”
Kohn has been the leading scorer for the ‘Cats all season, averaging 15.9 points per game. She is also ranked 12th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage, according to an NCAA national rankings summary from Jan. 24.
Myers will be ready
Center Chandra Myers took a fall Saturday at Central Michigan, but Crawley said the injury isn’t enough to keep her out of the game.
Myers fell on her back and went to the bench but returned later in the game. She did not practice yesterday, but Crawley said she will be ready for the Ball State game “for sure.”
“This is something she’s battled with for about two years now,” Crawley said. “When it gets bad we just like to give her rest to make sure she’s ready for the next game.”
