The Bobcats returned to Athens last night from the Golden Corral Phoenix Classic in North Carolina with another victory and four more games under their belts.

Ohio faced off with Elon and Seton Hall two times each over the weekend in their second stint in North Carolina this season.

On Saturday, the team split their first two games. The first game resulted in a 6-5 loss in eight innings to Seton Hall, with the second game resulting in a 2-1 victory over Elon.

The Bobcats did not fare as well yesterday, however, as they fell to both Seton Hall and Elon with final scores of 2-1 and 8-1, respectively.

The Bobcats (4-5) did not have the weekend they could have hoped for, finishing with a 1-3 record, but they did produce some quality play on defense, said freshman catcher Jordan Paden.

“We played a lot of good defense, especially in the outfield,” Paden said. “Shalene Petrich and the entire outfield did a good job, along with our pitching staff.”

Freshman pitcher Emily Wethington turned in another outstanding performance by adding another win to her rookie year with Saturday’s victory over Elon. Wethington went five and 2/3 innings, allowing only two hits and one run to go along with seven walks and six strikeouts. Senior Michelle Sauter finished the game with one and 1/3 innings of work, giving up zero hits and no runs.

“Emily and Michelle both pitched well,” Paden said.

Paden produced some good work over the weekend herself, coach Jill Matyuch said.

“Jordan played great for us and hit and caught really well,” Matyuch said.

Paden’s and the rest of the Bobcats’ hitting was not enough, though, as the team produced only eight runs in four games.

“We had a lot of runners left on base and just fell short of getting runs across the board,” Matyuch said.
