The Bobcats lost a heartbreaker to Ohio Wesleyan yesterday after failing to hold on to a 6-0 lead as they fell 8-7 in ten innings in Chillicothe.
Zach Fairbanks pitched well for the Bobcats (3-4) in his first start of the season. The left-handed junior threw six innings, only allowing three hits and giving up zero runs to go along with four strikeouts.
The Bobcats’ lead started to collapse in the eighth inning when Ohio Wesleyan cut the lead to two after scoring four runs off relief pitchers Matt Schlarb and Mike Babin.
In the top of the ninth, Ohio Wesleyan took the lead by adding three runs off relief pitcher Joe Stover to make the score 7-6.
The Bobcats went on to tie the game at seven in the bottom of the ninth inning to force the game into extra innings.
Ohio Wesleyan added another run in the top of the tenth to make it 8-7, which turned into the final score after the Bobcats failed to get another run across the plate.
Ohio Wesleyan’s Joey McDaniel picked up his first victory of the season while the Bobcats’ Adam Goodpasture earned the loss.
The Bobcats did score seven runs, however, which was well above their season average of 4.8 runs per game heading into yesterday’s matchup.
Senior outfielder Matt Stiffler had another stellar performance at the plate, finishing 3-for-5 on the day, with all three of his RBIs coming from a three-run double in the sixth inning. He also added a walk and scored a run.
Sophomore Marc Krauss continued raising his batting average after struggling early in the season, by going 2-for-5 at the plate to go along with a run scored and RBI.
Freshman designated hitter Robert Maddox III added to the Bobcats’ hitting attack by hitting a two-run triple and finishing 2-for-3 from the plate with two RBIs, one run scored, and a walk.
The Bobcats will look to bounce back from this tough loss when they play at UNC Greensboro in a three game series that starts Friday.
