Former Bobcat safety Todd Koenig has signed a contract with the Cleveland Browns as an undrafted college free agent, his agent Keith Conrad said yesterday.
Koenig finished with a team-high 96 tackles, including four tackles for a loss. He also had a team-high 10 pass breakups for the Bobcats last season.
He has been a solid contributor for the Bobcats the past three seasons and has started in parts of the last three seasons, including all 23 games of the last two seasons.
According an article in the Dayton Daily News, he ran in the 4.4’s in the 40-yard dash during Ohio’s Pro Day in March and did 13 repetitions of 225 pounds in the bench press. He also registered a 33-inch vertical jump.
The Browns were one of several teams that had shown interest in Koenig and compared him to longtime NFL safety John Lynch.
Koenig will report to Cleveland for the Browns rookie mini camp on Thursday.
Former running back Joshua Abrams will fly to New York on Thursday for a visit with the New York Jets, he said yesterday.
Abrams backed up Kalvin McRae for the past four seasons and was primarily used on special teams.
He blocked a team-high three kicks last season, all three of which came in the Bobcats’ first game of the season against Gardner-Webb. He had two forced fumbles. He also had a career-long kickoff return of 47 yards against Eastern Michigan.
In 2006, he blocked a team-high three punts. Abrams also had 27 special-teams tackles in his career.
Abrams opened some eyes with a 4.35 40-yard dash time, which was the fastest time at Ohio’s Pro Day.
He projects as either a defensive back or a running back in the NFL.
