The Bobcats got to spend some time in the sun this weekend.

With the difference in weather, however, also came a difference from the standard course Ohio plays on.

The Bobcats finished in 10th place at the Mission Inn Collegiate Classic, shooting a 902 for a 50-over-par performance in the three-round tournament. The course featured Bermuda grass, which gave the Bobcats a lot of trouble. It made the greens much slower, according to coach Bob Cooley.

The Bobcats finished the tournament ahead on Sunday, shooting a 297 for 14-over par.  They finished with a 298 on Saturday’s round, and, just like at Ball State, started the tournament out slow in the opening round on Friday. They shot 22-over par 307.

“We definitely need to work on our short game, and also have to get better with playing in the wind,” Cooley said. “We’re definitely making progress, but we’ve for sure had some trouble with showing up at the beginning of tournaments.”

“We’ve just had some trouble adjusting to the new courses,” junior Stewart Jamieson said.  “Especially with this one, where they have Bermuda grass as opposed to what we’re used to up north.”

Individually, Jamieson stood out for the Bobcats. He shot a five-over par 218 over the three-day tournament to finish in 15th.  Jamieson, with his 73.22 stroke average, has been arguably the Bobcats’ best and most consistent golfer. The Columbus native also finished in third at Bowling Green’s Piper Intercollegiate.

“He’s played real well for us this fall,” Cooley said.  “His ball-striking in Florida was very good.  The greens gave him some trouble, but overall he played very well.”

“I hit the ball well and was consistent with driving it in play,” Jamieson said.  “I just had some trouble with the greens since the grass was different. I never really got a feel for the green.”

Other participating Bobcats weren’t able to put together similar performances.  Junior Chad Warmbein finished in a tie for 31st and freshman John Mlynarski tied for 45th with a 229.  Junior Tim Gusweiler shot a 232, good for 51st, and senior James Ellis finished 65th with a 236.
