Dan Morris saw something Friday night that no coach wants to see — his team quit.

Ohio couldn’t convert on a 5-on-3 power play less than two minutes into the third period, trailing Lindenwood 3-2.

Two minutes later, the Lions, ranked No. 2 in the nation, scored on a power play to go up two goals.

“It’s hard to say, but they quit,” Morris said.  “It’s a tough pill to swallow.  You can work hard, work hard, work hard, but when you give up, that’s the ultimate insult.”

With 2:13 left in the game, Jimmy Irwin and Ryan Whyte got mixed up with Brett Morrell and Justin McLaughlin of Lindenwood. All four players received two-minute roughing and 10-minute misconduct penalties.  Irwin also got a two-minute interference penalty.  Corey Bise was already serving a penalty for Ohio.

Lindenwood scored on the resulting 5-on-3 power play to go up 5-2, then converted another power-play goal with 15 seconds left to beat the Bobcats 6-2.

The line of Irwin, Whyte, and Bryan Brown was strong for Ohio.  Irwin deflected Whyte’s shot to score the Bobcats’ first goal of the game.

“Fearless,” Morris said.  “Together, the three of them have four college games under their belt, and they were fearless.  Veteran guys got to see that and rally around that because they were exciting to watch tonight.”

Saturday night saw a lot of improvements for the Bobcats despite a 5-1 loss to Lindenwood.

“I think we got a lot better,” Bise said.  “We learned a lot about ourselves.  It was a great opportunity to go into this week and work on things we need to.”

Billy Hemann scored the lone Ohio goal, knocking in a rebound with 57 seconds left in the first period.  The Bobcats had a lot of scoring opportunities and shots, but Lindenwood goalie Robi Cavillari shut down the Ohio attack.

“Their goalie played great,” Bise said.  “We just need to learn to finish and get it going.”
