Baumholtz remembered

THE POST

A memorial service for the late Frank C. Baumholtz will be held at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Galbreath Chapel. Speaking at the ceremony will be OU President Robert Glidden, former presidents Charles Ping and Vern Alden and current Board of Trustees Chair Brandon "Tad" Grover.

The public ceremony will be held in honor of the Baumholtz, who died Dec. 14, 1997, in Florida.

Baumholtz led the Ohio basketball team to the finals of the 1941 National Invitational Tournament and lettered three times in basketball and baseball at Ohio.

After leaving Athens, he played professional basketball for the Cleveland Rebels (1946-47) and had 10 seasons in major league baseball with three different teams. Baumholtz, nicknamed "the Midvale Marvel," actually played both basketball and baseball during the 1946-47 seasons.

As a major leaguer, he played with the Cincinnati Reds, Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies. In 1952, he finished second in the league in hitting with a .325 average, second only to Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Stan Musial.

Baumholtz was inducted into the Ohio University Athletics Hall of Fame in 1965 and became the only Ohio athlete to have his jersey number retired Feb. 4, 1995, when his number 54 was hung from The Convo rafters.

In addition to the ceremony, the Ohio men's basketball team has been paying tribute to Baumholtz since he died by wearing his number on their jerseys.

Track teams head to All-Ohio

The Ohio men's and women's indoor track and field teams head to Kent State this weekend to compete in the All-Ohio championships. Two other MAC schools, Kent and Akron will also compete.

The teams are coming off a down meet last Saturday at Bowling Green. The men finished fifth out of seven teams and the women finished fifth out of eight.

Some individuals for both squads are coming off of good meets. Ben Myers won the 3,000 meters in eight minutes, 29.53 seconds, and was the only male Bobcat winner. Jackie Conrad was the only female Bobcat to win an event. She won the 5,000 meters in 17:18.0.

Tom Smith, who is one of the best shot putters in the conference, finished fourth with a throw of 53 feet, 2-3/4 inches.
