MAC represented at NCAA conference
Ten Mid-American Conference student athletes representing
seven sports have been selected to attend the NCAA Foundation Leadership
Conference.
The conference, which will take place at Walt Disney’s Wide World
of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., is intended to bring student
athletes from allover the country together to discuss current issues
and enhance leadership skills.
Out of the 1,183 nominations, 300 student athletes are chosen. Participants
are nominated by their school’s NCAA CHAMPS/Life Skills coordinator
and chosen by a nine-member committee.
The MAC student-athletes attending the conference are: Eastern Michigan
runner Charlise Walters, Marshall runner Celeste Simpson, Miami runner
Lauren Collins, Western Michigan runner Heather Johnson, Ball State
runner Michael Johnson, Bowling Green quarterback Josh Harris, Akron
swimmer Lindsay McGee, Central Michigan first baseman Mike Gates, Kent
State middle blocker Julie Ruff and Northern Illinois golfer Joe True.
MAC honors scholar-athletes of the week
Two track and field athletes and one baseball player were recently
named as MAC scholar athletes of the week.
Eastern Michigan thrower Brit Klanert was honored after winning her
second javelin competition in two weeks. Klanert is also the defending
MAC champion in the javelin.
Toledo runner Briana Shook was the second track and field athlete
honored. Shook defended her championship in the 3000-meter steeplechase
at the Sea Ray Relays. Her time is the best in the nation and the fifth-best
in the world.
Buffalo first baseman Corey Blair also was chosen after going 3-for-3
in the Bulls’ victory against Bowling Green. Blair also was responsible
for eight putouts and an assist.
