Benefit concert to raise money for Recyclebration festival

The Recyclebration Benefit tonight at Casa Nueva, 4 W. State St., will be more about music than raising money.

Casa Nueva will host two bands at tonight's benefit. Mothman will open for Mas Bagua, a "psychedelic tribal poetry" band, at 10 p.m., said Summer Dickey, AmeriCorps VISTA for ReUse Industries, 74815 US Hwy 50.

The benefit is intended not only to raise money for a free Recyclebration 2002 festival held next weekend at ReUse Industries, but also is an opportunity for the members of ReUse to thank the Athens community, Dickey said.

"I think that people are pretty aware of what we're doing." she said. "The festival isn't just a free event, it's our way to say thank you to the community."

Donations received at the benefit will profit the fifth year of the Recyclebration festival, Dickey said. The money will pay for sound technicians, stage fees and miscellaneous services.

Any money not used will be saved for next year's festival, Dickey said.

But she said donations are not necessary for people to enjoy the entertainment at Casa Nueva and mingle with patrons.

"We make (the benefit) a donation basis so that people who don't have money, but who really want to come, can come," she said.

This year the Recyclebration 2002 festival will have four musical entertainers, environmental information booths, local food vendors and games and crafts for kids to participate in, she said.
