The Ohio football team takes the field Nov. 16 against Akron. After having their most successful season since 1968 and winning the Mid-American Conference East Division Championship, coach Frank Solich’s Bobcats were named The Post’s Team of the Year.

There is a popular T-shirt worn by many Ohio University students that says, “Athens is a drinking town with a football problem.”

Well, after the Ohio football team’s record-breaking season in which it went to its first-ever Mid-American Conference Championship and first bowl game since 1968, it looks like Athens is now just a drinking town.

Utilizing a staunch defense, prolific special teams and an offense that scored when it needed to, the Bobcats racked up their most wins (nine) since 1968 and won their first-ever MAC East Division crown. Although the Bobcats lost in both the conference championship and the GMAC Bowl, it was a remarkable feat that they got as far as they did.

After a 2-3 start and a number of off-the-field distractions, the Bobcats, who were picked to finish fourth in the division at the beginning of the season, rattled off seven consecutive victories, the longest streak since ’68, culminating with a 34-24 victory at rival Miami.

Aside from The Post naming it the Team of the Year, the football team’s achievements did not go unnoticed by the conference. Coach Frank Solich was named MAC Coach of the Year, while four players were named to the All-MAC First Team.
